Why not make this the default and not let the user to choose?

Depending on screen resolution/window size as well as user
preference (I'd go for quite small myself, but someone with poorer
vision might want a larger slide size), I think users would
appreciate to ability to change it, even if we make this the default.
Which option would satisfy most of the users or would be the
expected behavior?

I myself when picking with mouse don't want it to jump at all.

When changing items using keyboard, then maybe the preferred way
depends on how many items fit into the viewport at the same time.
More possible items meaning more visible history.

I like that it jumps, but would prefer that the currently selected
slide remain on screen, partly because I like to see where I'm at
(despite the preview screen), but also because the option for
clicking on the current slide to advance effects in PowerPoint is a
pain to use if the list keeps scrolling to the next one.
I suspect some people would also like the option to have the
previous slide visible so they can easily go back.
As you mentioned, some people don't want it auto-scrolling at all,
and for some people it will depend on how many items fit into the
viewport, so having the option to choose seems like the way to go to
me.
